Glossary of Terms

Albino

Albino in Reptiles is more suited to A-Melanistic or Missing Melan aka Black Pigment. In Leopard Geckos there are 3 known Recessive Albino, Bell, Rainwater and Tremper Albino.

Allele

One of two (or more) alternate forms of a gene that occupy the same position on a chromosome. For each gene, two alleles are present.

Amelanistic

Missing black pigment aka Melan

Brumation

Lowering temperatures as a cooling period to bring on breeding when raised back up.

Dominant

A gene that is dominant displays if the mutation is present. However, a double copy is thought to be the same as the single copy or in some cases lethal and therefore not possible. It is very difficult to confirm a 2 copy form as every baby would contain it, however this also could simply be very lucky.

Gene

A unit of heredity containing information about a specific trait that is passed from parent to child. Each gene is made up of two alleles, which combine to determine which characteristic is present

Genotype

Combination of genes contributing to the presence of a trait

Heterozygous

Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.

Homozygous

Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes

Hypo

Reduced. When used in leopard geckos this is used as a sort form for Hypo melanistic or reduced black spots.

Incomplete Dominant

In Incomplete Dominant genes, the single copy or Heterozygous form does display a change however the two copy or Homozygous displays the full mutation. This is often called the Super form. An example of this is Mack Snow is the single copy and Super Snow is the two copy.

Melan

Black Pigment

Melanistic

Black pigment in excess

Phenotype

An observable trait either genetically or by environment. For example a tangerine can be orange by Genotype but due to carotene in their diet they can have a red phenotype.

Recessive

A Recessive gene requires two copies of the mutant gene to display. A single copy or Heterozygous mutant gene will still look normal as the normal or wild type form is dominant over the mutant gene, therefore being recessive to the Normal.

Super

Often used to label a two copy incomplete dominant gene. With incomplete dominant genes the named gene such as Mack Snow is the single copy or Homozygous form. The two copy is therefore labelled super. With Super hypo, the term is used to label the extreme form of no black spots.
